DRAGON FRUIT

Dragon fruit is fleshy, their inside flesh can be white or pink and has a multitude of small and black seeds. The taste of this fruit is sweet. Its skin is quite striking, has reddish or yellow color and covered of green-yellow scales which give a peculiar appearance to this fruit.

Dragon fruit has a mild flavor. Goes well with other tropical fruits and can be diced and added to salads, fruit salads or desserts. With the juice of this fruit and sugar can be obtained delicious sorbets.

Culture

Our ancients called these fruits as Water Tunas (Tunas de Agua) and then the Spaniards discovered it in Mexico, Colombia, Central America and the Antilles and named it “Pitaya” or “Pitahaya”, which means “the fruit with scales”. The Earthship Pitaya Festival takes place in February in Nicaragua, specifically in the city of San Juan Del Sur, and has the purpose to honor this regional product and to raise awareness of environmental issues.

Origin

Dragon fruit was discovered by the Spanish conquerors in Mexico, Colombia, Central America and the Antilles. Nowadays this fruit is cultivated in Mexico, Nicaragua and Vietnam.
